In November 06 a decision was taken by Donegal Action for Cancer Care to send two represenatives to Meadville along with Deirdre Grant to go and visit Dr Barry Bitman at his community hospital. At the time there was a lot of controversay over the proposed trip but the decision at County Committee level was for two DACC members to go.This trip was to research in more detail how this community service worked.

In the interest of cancer patients and services in Donegal it was strongly felt that DACC had an obligation to research the possible “ Community Breast Screening Service, owned by the Community for the Community” It was felt that only by going would we have the information for discussion and a decision could then be made on it’s feasibilty.

After the trip Deirdre Grant started to further research the possibilty of bringing a community breast screening service to Donegal and established The North West Wellness Centre.

DACC discussed in great detail at local and county committee level if DACC should support this initative. It was agreed that DACC would support this initative provided that it would be a community service for the community. DACC were provided with the opportunity to elect two members to sit on the Board of Directors of The North West Wellness Centre and two members were duly elected at a County Committee meeting. These members will feed back to DACC and ensure that DACC have a voice at this table.

While DACC is supporting the initative it is important to point out that The Wellness Centre is a separate project from DACC.

The North West Wellness Centre was officially launched with a Fashion Show on the 27th September 07 in the Clanree Hotel, Letterkenny.
